Sink drain hoses

On advice of insurance surveyor, I am replacing the drain hoses on both my sinks (Sadler 32). Both short direct runs c.1 metre to the seacock below. Is clear PVC hose reinforced with polyester mesh OK or do I need stuff with steel spiral reinforcement? Also, do you think I should put a bend/loop in the run to stop blowback into the sink or would that prevent it draining?

I would suggest the clear mesh reinforced is fine as you are presumably running straight down from the sink drain. Unless you can find a premade trap ( u bend) the hose will never hold that shape.. not sure it would ever blow back but probably a good idea to ensure the hose you use is suitable to withstand boiling water without collapsing. Cheers.

Clear PVC is ok if straight but if it has any bends it will start to pinch and make a blockage over time

It's expensive but the nice Vetus toilet hose is great - doesn't kink and no smells permeate
If not then spiral

I'd suspect, although you would possibly know, it was age of hose. I'd replace with the reinforced of any type in a like for like run with no loops which will allow standing water and smells. Remember the double hose clips at the seacock.

The drain for the basin in our heads is short and turns through 90 deg. It blocked constantly, so I put an elbow in it. End of blockages. That pipe doesn't like sharp bends, it'll just kink.

I doubt a loop or U bend would prevent blowback but, unless the sink is below the waterline when heeled, it'll never be more than an odd drop which is most unlikely to make it up a metre of pipe, If it does go below, then I'd fit - and use - a seacock. Our Snapdragon had one, it didn't work, but never caused an issue. The Catalac doesn't even have them.

Probably OK in practice (hot water will cool quickly), but the temperature range for that type of hose is typically up to 60 degrees C. For this reason I chose a different type when replacing the galley sink hose a few years ago. IIRC the type was intended for use in hydraulic equipment.

No bends or loops, IMO.

Your u bend in a domestic situation is to prevent foul drain smells. Definitely not necessary on a boat. As mentioned above it will kink with hot water . As for blow back? . Just close off the seacock if thats what your referring to.
The diameter of the waste pie is also much smaller than your 32mm / 40 mm domestic stuff , straight and short as possible. Though mine does have two loose radius bends in . The plunger is always on hand .

Further investigation shows galley drain hose is double clipped and although not reinforced type is pretty thick pvc with no cracks or kinks so will leave for now. So I’m just replacing the one in the heads which needs removing to double clip anyway. Can’t imagine anything more than 40C going down there.

I have a fairly long "white, plastic coated, curtain spring" under the basin for use in clearing blockages. Goes round most bends easily.

Tried to remove old hose to ensure replacement is right size - definitely need junior hacksaw for this but noticed the threaded plastic fitting on the sink outlet is bigger than the seacock and somehow the hose had been stretched over it . Doubt I could do that - is it possible to get “step up” adapters?

Mine is also like that. The hose must have a good leisurely soak at around 100 degrees Celsius to soften it up enough . Which i admit to doing similar , if only temporarily, in my line of work.
When I come to change ile be looking at alternatives

For pvc hose, particularly unreinforced type, dip the end of the hose in very hot water first and it should expand as you push it onto the larger fitting

Think you were typing as I was editing, but yes agree.

One thing to mention is this process will definitely weaken the wall of the expanded pipe , so proceed with caution. Suitable reducers can be found but the internal diameter must let the sweetcorn pass through lol

This ones for the heads basin so sweetcorn only comes up..........sorry I'll skip the rest! My preference would be a reducer if I can find one
