I just spent a couple of days cruising on a hire boat from Buscot lock, just below Lechlade.

The upper Thames is really delightful, very green, very rural, full of interesting wildlife. We even saw a snake swimming across the river. Loads of good birds, all sorts of cattle… excellent. Very few people, fewer boats. Also not many places to tie up and not too many pubs. The ones we did stop at at had mostly average food. I would recommend carrying a good supply of your own food, and just use the pubs for drinks, not food.
On this occasion we didn’t stop at the Maybush at Newbridge but I’ve been there before and I think that may be the best of the pubs up here.

Anyway I thought it was a great stretch of water and I hope to do this little cruise again

Never fail to enjoy the navigation on our visits.
Time and prop damage have tended to curtail the length of past trips, Goring the limit of our cruising to date.
Best bit.............................. not having to take any notice at all of the 5.30 Shipping forecast with only coots outside the boat and not the ominous sound of wind whistling through the rigging of surrounding yachts.

We loved the Upper Thames, both our Freemans were well suited up there, both had marinised Ford Anglia engines put putting away like a sewing machine, very easy to work on using only a thimble full of fuel an hour.

Byron, what a top bloke 🙏
