This is the current status of the downstream navigation arch at Cookham. A tree is wedged into the bridge guards. It arrived during the January floods.
I know that it is red boards and will be for a bit longer but once the weir closing starts people will come out.
I found a life ring in the...

Partial demolition of Teddington Lock footbridge proposed
Looks like it might be out of use for a while this winter if the proposed works go ahead.
The wooden footbridge above Temple lock has been closed by the EA because it is unsafe.
It was closed some time ago but allowed to reopen. This time it looks like it might be properly dangerous.
Let's hope it doesn't fall in the River.
'Unsafe' Temple Bridge between Hurley and Marlow closed...
Talking to someone in the next generation up from me (I'm 48 and counting) got me wondering if there is an exodus going on or about to happen.
He has been boating on the River for 30+ years. I've only done 36 years on the Thames in my short lifetime but it did get me wondering what the deal is...
River Thames: restrictions and closures
There are several locks potentially closing next week but no confirmation that it is actually happening.
Can we assume the River is open as normal on the "TBC" locks ?
Needs an update.
Hambleden, Boulters, Cookham, bray, boveney, old Windsor, Romney...
I find it interesting to consider what small details might put people off going boating on the River.
It seems possible that quite small details could have quite a large effect.
An elderly couple I know who have a pleasure boat said they found the slowed down water points very off-putting. And...
There seem to be more fallen trees not getting tidied up lately.
Once the big Ash trees start going due to the dieback disease it will get quite interesting.
I've done some fairly intensive patrolling including Windsor to Lechlade and back to Henley and it seems to be a bit of a nuisance.
In...
I remember when this was part of the TWA then NRA then EA tug fleet then it disappeared from the normal mooring at Sunbury.
Lovely little launch tug I wonder if it will find itself back on the River at some point. Perhaps one for Steve Bil if he hasn't got enough already?
39ft Thames Tug work...
I imagine most people are aware of this but the EA are removing the hose reels. I think it's a elfin safety issue.
I was at Hurley earlier today, not needing the water point but noticed the hose has gone and the tap has a complicated non return valve which it turns out needs to have "no...
Noticed a thread about it on canalworld.
The link to the article is here.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service wins landmark court case against unsafe vessel on River Thames
I wonder what the actual outcome will be. Will the River eventually be rid of the terrible rubbish barges one day ?
That handsome MFV trawler yacht conversion which has been sitting by Nicholes boatyard above Bell Weir for years has finally been broken up by the EA.

I'm sure I'm not alone in remembering when that was a very very nice beautifully kept trawler...
I've just been up to Lechlade in the toy trawler which is about 3ft4 deep on twin shafts with flat skegs.
River is ok. Some pretty shallow bits here and there but then the statutory minimum up here is 3ft. I didn't get stuck anywhere and managed to turn below the road bridge.
Despite people...
I was coming up towards Iffley lock earlier today and there were swimmers in the water and also a boat exiting the lock, who had already closed the gates.
So I took the green to green route and lined up for the lay-by. The boat exiting the lock knew what I was doing so no problem there.
I...
Just thought it was worth putting in a comment about the current status of the River between Boveney lock and Abingdon.
I've moved a boat through this section of the River the last couple of days.
All locks are on public power apart from Marsh and Days which were on the wheel due to a problem...
Other discussion got me wondering how this job will get done.
Do the EA have equipment to raise the boat?
It seems to be a wide beam canal boat about 60ft long maybe 11ft wide.
So if it was 2ft draught (might be more) that would be a back of the envelope weight of
15 X 3.4 X 0.6
Say 30...
I've been to Lechlade in several different boats first time in 1995 and last time was 2018 but my latest boat is 3ft4 draught. 11ft beam, twin shafts with heavy skegs so this is quite a "wide" draught. And the skegs are the same as the keel depth.
I previously thought it was 3ft6 up to...
Quite predictable really.
I would imagine that within a few days there will be a full closure of navigation.
I know it's a PRN waterway but this Covid situation is a bit unusual.
Looks like a suspension of normal activity on the lovely River for a month or two.
Fingers crossed for not too...
Is this allowed?
I thought the Thames was a PRN waterway but this EA notice seems to imply that the River can be closed to navigation in favour of rowers.

I hope I am wrong about this.
Gallions Point marina on the Thames has been repossessed by the GLA.
boat owners have until 26OCT18 to make contact with new management
Just thought worth putting it here as they are not giving much time so might save someone a nasty shock.
