What boat would you buy to circumnavigate the UK and beyond, with only £5k?

Very true. Young couple in a boatyard I was in spent two years re fitting an Elizabethan 29 with a view to sailing to the Caribbean, only to lose a bit of drive and enthusiasm towards the end of the re fit, especially the Lady. She had her eye on a nice cottage in the village. Anyway they set...

    Perkins woes

Update. Changed the head gasket today, it looked ok, I was expecting to see a problem with it. put the engine back together this afternoon. Did the tappets which were fine, I was surprised how easy it was to turn the engine over slowly with a long torque wrench. I was expecting more resistance...

    Engine wont start!

Agree, done this a few times and it works. Also bad earth's around the boat doesn't help. When mine started cranking slow it turned out to be a bad connection on the 1-2-both switch

    Engine wont start!

Should be a lot more fuel coming out. Take care as it's high pressure and can penetrate skin.

    Heater Plugs

When my engine was playing up starting I took the 3 Glow plugs out, switched to heat and two were bright red and one wasn't. Problem solved

    Engine wont start!

Try putting heat into the air intake, that usually works

    Engine wont start!

The do have a cold start procedure. If you don't follow it they will never star. I had the same engine 20 odd years ago but can't remember the procedure. Someone will come along soon who will know

    Perkins woes

Agreed. I have taken a step back from tackling the engine myself. I have a diesel engineer taking a look tomorrow. I've decided I'm too old to be crawling around especially when I haven't a clue what I'm doing.

Thanks for the reply. Yes plenty of water coming through the strainer. Did you have any of the pulsating of the rubber end caps?
