Correct but that is only the operator which is covered to transmit on marine frequencies (and crew members under supervision).
I fully understand about it being capable of being modified to be opened up for marine frequencies BUT once modified, it then falls into the category of non compliance...
The Icom 718 is not a Marine receiver but built for the amateur bands and it does not have HF/MF frequency bands or DSC. The web site does sell other transceivers which are designed for the maritime frequencies.
To operate the Icom M718 transceiver, you will need an amateur radio HF licence.

Would it be possible to have a bit more info about the state of the yacht, nav equipment, comms, anchors, EPIRB, charts?
She draws 1.8 metres so the canal route would need some very careful planning. Round the outside could probably be better?

My fold-away bike cost £139.95 from Halfords and is far, far lighter to pick-up and carry that a Brompton. It has 6 gears and has gone rusty just like all bikes will do on cruising yachts.
As you will find out, there is an excess to pay which would cost more than a bike.
