How to identify Avon Redstart from Redcrest?

I think the most obvious thing is the webbing strap for a thwart at the back which Redcrest has but Redstart hasn't.

    Crystal II

I know a little. Prior to coming down south in about 1995 she belonged to my family from the west of Scotland. We sold her to a couple from Essex. Sometime after you lost track of her, Mr Maskell from Great Bentley, Essex took on restoring her and did a great job. Sadly he died before he...

eNavigation, does anyone still navigate traditionally?

I'm interested, in the days of GPS and plotters even in the cockpit or in our pockets. When was the last time anyone plotted a position on a paper chart without GPS, dead-reckoned or worked out an EP? Every time someone on the forum asks about laptops, tablets and handheld chart plotter someone...

cheaper large instrument displays - mast mount

Shaun and Co, looks like you're doing a great job - keep it up. If you could come up with a DIY instrument kit you could tap into a huge boaters 'winter projects' market. I'd buy one.

LED bulbs in masthead tri-coloured lights

Re: original question I work for a commercial boatbuilder. We have used the Lopolights on a few boats now. We first used them at an owner's request but scince have made them standard on most of our boats. The quality appears to be excellent and they are fully approved for use in most countries...

    RCD complience - selfbuild boats

I think Raider is right. 5 years under your use clears it to be allowed to be put on the market. There is no regulation saying that you cannot use a non RCD / CE Marked boat. The regulations affect only if they may be placed on the market. I recon that many, many boats are sold each year...

    Wee boat insurance.

I'm trying to insure my little boat. She's a 25 foot Stephen Joned designed mini-tonner from 1980. It's a great wee boat but not worth very much any more say £3000-£4000. I've been doing a bit of shopping around but I can't get anyone to insure it without a survey. Trouble is all I really want...

    Is the surveyor right?

In the event that the boat is holed and flooding it is likely that both heads and outlet will become submerged, probably sealing the boats fate. Openings like this are called downflooding points and are any point where the vessel may take water in when submerged. If you put a gooseneck in then...

    USB GPS's and Electronic charts

Re: USB GPS\'s and Electronic charts I've got the set up that your talking about. It's Maxsea and C-Map NT charts with a USB 'mouse' GPS. I'v e had the Maxsea for a while and used it with a handheld GPS, worked well but set-up was a bit clumsy. So I bought one of the USB GPS off ebay, about...

    Laptop GPS of ebay

I also bought the USB one on eBay from aktronix. I was very pleased with it. Quick to set up and works well with my MaxSea. Steve is right about com 5, took me a while to find it in microchip world! I think it was about £25 - It's hard to see why we need to pay full price for anything now!

    Object on Canna

I Sail from Loch Creran just North of Oban. We have lots of these objects around and they're nav lights. Battery supply with solar panels to charge. Theey're often placed on submerjed rocks with the batteries on a platform above highest springs. They look just like that but I can't be sure its...
