Surely they are flying the wrong courtesy flag. Shouldn’t it be the red ensign rather than the union flag ?

Perhaps they have,t reached the chapter in the training manual dealing with flag protocol.or maybe only blue ensigns on board and a no no so picked up what you see in Nuaticalia.

Whilst it should be the red ensign does it really matter? Most countries fly their national flag so it's not uncommon to see visiting boats use the union jack.
Its not a legal requirement but a courtesey

I've seen Warships and Merchant Ships fly the Union Flag as a courtesy flag so that's pretty normal IMHO.

I don't think I've seen any not flying their own flag, that is unusual and I'd love to know why. I have a feeling there will be a reason.

Ive seen foreign ships in portsmouth dockyard without a nationality flag at the stern..

The Sandown-class minehunters, formerly HMS Shoreham and HMS Grimsby, now renamed Cherkasy and Chernihiv after being transferred to Ukraine last year, arrived in Portsmouth following a two-day voyage from Scotland.

They appear to be flying the Ukrainian Naval Ensign, albeit not at the stern.
