    McMurdo M10 AIS MMSI reprogram.

Good news. To change the MMSI was quite a simple process, providing that one has a Windows laptop with a CD-ROM, and the original CD-ROM of course. Helpful people at McMurdo/Orolia gave me the "code" to change the MMSI, which went well. Thumbs up to all. I used my wife's Windows 10 laptop, as it...

    Satisfactory, or preying on yotties?

These people believe that they're offering a fair and reasonable price for this. Of course I didn't buy this, I went to another company who were charging £18.70, which is OK, but then they tried to sting me with with £19 p&p FFS! Ended up paying £18+£5.95 to get it delivered. On a positive...

    Hull speed?

Just a thought, the max hull speed of 'A' boat is 6kts. This is a light weight, 24', 1/4 tonner. Is there a calculation to establish the wind speed at which the boat will reach Vmax at, given flat water?

    Sad.

This is on the beach at Fortrose. The boat's been here since October, and has survived the winter quite well. I'm told that she's not insured for salvage.

    VHF/AIS splitter.

I'm going over to the dark side, and purchasing a GRP boat. I'm going to be fitting a McMurdo M10 AIS transponder transferred from my present boat, and wish to use the existing mast head VHF antenna, which will require a splitter. Is this Glomex unit any good?

    Mould & Mildew remover.

As the title says, I'm giving "Dettol Mould & Mildew remover" a big thumbs up. My cockpit tent looked appalling prior to applying it, but about 1/2 an hour later vigorously hosing it off it's looking very good. My cockpit tent isn't vinyl, but 'tan/beige' canvas. Being Dettol, it's available...

    Where's a Jet-Ski when you want one?

Not one to be seen. when you think they might be fun to look at.

    Sun Dancer Nairn.

Very good place for very good food, maybe 50 metres from the marina with incredible views across the Moray Forth towards Cromarty. I've been there several times and have never found cause to complain.

    New to me adhesive sealant.

I've never encountered this stuff before: Simson msr construction adhesive sskf along with Prep-P. A boatbuilder chum of mine rates it very highly, above CT1 and epoxy for water proofing/leak stuff, and reckons that if he were to have my carvel (leaking) boat, he'd use it. Anyone here with any...

    Lowering a full length keel?

I've a keel bolt 'issue' on my carvel Folkboat, where a bolt was looser than it should've been, and has induced a leak which requires the sealing area between the hull and the keel to be 'redone', requiring the keel to be lowered/boat to be raised. The distance needed for this is around about...

    Chemiphase engine degreaser?

The engine bay and bilge on my boat really need a good clean whilst the boat's going to be laid up at home this winter, so I was considering using this product. Has anyone of us had any experience with it?

    2T oil price.

I went into an Inverness Esso station today, and bought 2 green jerry cans of petrol; 1 for my 4T outboard, the 2nd for my 2T Tohatsu 3.5hp. Quick thought was that I'd not brought the 2T oil with me, it was still in the garage. No worries, I'll buy a 1litre bottle here. At the checkout I was...

    Foreign solo insurance?

Does anyone know an insurance company doing insurance for solo sailors on overseas jaunts? This is Scotland-Norway-Faeroes stuff, NW Europe, not transat stuff.. Haven't looked yet, nor approached my own insurer; just looking for a 'heads up' from folks in the know.

    Engine wouldn't start??

Yesterday, I took out the cockpit decking and exposed the full engine area on my Folkboat; all very standard stuff. I'd had an 'incident' a couple of weeks ago where I'd smelt oil whilst motoring, a very vague haziness of smoke occasionally, but nothing 'wrong'. After a couple of hours of...

    Bilge Pump Float Switch.

The bilge float switch has been on the boat for about a couple of years, and hasn't deteriorated at all; why would it? However, it's always been slightly intermittent in operation by way of the float being light, enough that on occasion it hasn't switched itself off, and has stayed in the...

    Impeller cooling.

A fair number of threads on here involve the above. On a car forum, it's rare that the water pump gets a mention, so why do 'we' tolerate these little rotating rings of rubbery crap? My Toyota Hybrid has an "Inverter Pump" for circulating cooling fluid around the inverter, and cooling it. This...

    Sheet to tiller & Windvane.

I've had a DIY trimtab windvane on my Folkboat for a time, and it's OK, but does require the rig to be very well trimmed, and the boat set up to give a neutral helm. I believe that servo pendulum, or auxuliary rudder types are an easier set up, and more able to absorb a less neutral trim. Has...

    Battery health indicator lesson.

Everyday's a school day stuff. One of my batteries became a little discharged a few weeks ago, when a pump didn't switch off for 'awhile'. OK, no big deal, it sson accepted a charge quite from the solar panels, and the volts came up to normal and held the charge, however the 'green indicator'...

    Water storage.

As the title, what opinions are there for water storage onboard for a nominal 'month' of cruising, away from a certainty of marina's? The caveat is of a small boat, in my case a Folkboat which already has an approx 40 litre aluminum tank, and sailing solo, no shower onboard. The discussion with...
