Long term boat project and family life, What (not) to do?

This might depend on where you live and boat ! In my neck of the woods the river banks are literally lined with "boatyards" full of ancient long abandoned projects , the canvas tarpaulins long ripped to shreds by weather. Some are motorboats with big holes where the outdrives once were Right...

    H,mm............

The irony was a privately owned rib and probably the only thing capable of catching up up with the miscreants hired by our "Harbour Master " had only previously gone past about an hour earlier. Suspect the offenders had launched upstream which could only mean slips at Borstal, Cuxton and...

Long term boat project and family life, What (not) to do?

Some time ago purchased a motorboat that was bought as "kit" in the 1970s it was finally launched in the early 2000s, the owner took several decades to nearly finish it . It was kept close to home, ie. in his back/front garden, boat was moved every time he moved house. A heart attack meant...

    H,mm............

A small rib carrying what appeared to be a considerable quantity of highly inebriated youths, all shouting merrily away at the top of their voices, came past our moorings yesterday, while towing some other oik on a ringo. Not really a problem other than they were going flat out and causing...

    Pollution in The Blackwater

suspect natural causes rather than sewage this time........... Possibly sun drying out layer of mud and tide simply washing this off during the flood. Noticeable of the Merdway recently as well. Of more concern would have been the white foam on the waste water coming out of the Smurfit Kappa...

You can always count on OG to do the right thing - after he has tried everything else.

Actually had in the shed a specially ordered 10m bit of wire which had ordered ages ago to sort out something else that had conked out prior to this under the illusion that a new bit of wire would undoubtedly solve the problem. The fault of course lay somewhere else entirely and the unused...

You can always count on OG to do the right thing - after he has tried everything else.

Returning from a recent cruise , bothered to check T&Ps. No oil pressure on one engine. Spent night wondering just how much an engine rebuild will cost. Spent following day grovelling around in engine compartment and dismantling dashboard etc. Swap pressure senders and oil pressure gauges...

Garmin 4012 Plotter. Well it was working perfectly yesterday :(

Screen displays the previous days track but with a general indistinct map in background. Going to try card in another Garmin unit to see if chart card is faulty and connect plotter directly to mushroom. 🤞

Never fail to enjoy the navigation on our visits. Time and prop damage have tended to curtail the length of past trips, Goring the limit of our cruising to date. Best bit.............................. not having to take any notice at all of the 5.30 Shipping forecast with only coots outside...

    Siezed Outdrive Pin

Assumed that later versions of outdrives on newer boats would not now require such forensic servicing to avoid all the well known problems. With 4 or 5 boats lumbered with outdrives ( from a total of around 80 boats )on our moorings only one is in regular use (a pair of 270s) and the owner...

Garmin 4012 Plotter. Well it was working perfectly yesterday :(

Good idea and an easy job plus far more importantly will not involve the owner spending any money. Will pop down to his boat in the morning and give it a try.

Garmin 4012 Plotter. Well it was working perfectly yesterday :(

Seems to have lost its charts, no details , just fuzzy image of general area on the screen no matter how much you zoom in or out. Diving into the menu to the "satellite" screen..... no satellites detected. The "Mushroom" is functioning as another plotter and a radio also connected and also...
