    Denmark to Scotland

Thinking about next year, if I were to sail from Denmark to Scotland (moray firth area) am I best coming out the Elbe or Skaggerat? Aware wind direction is the major factor especially with the prevailing SW .. would probably be doing this late June, early July. Thoughts?

Which discs for Angle Grinder to clean prop

Last year a kindly worker nearby lent me an angle grinder to clean the prop, this worked a treat turning a 6 hour job into a 30 minute doddle. I'm going to buy a Makita battery powered one as I've already got a drill with a couple of 5A batteries. Can anyone tell me what discs I should get which...

Leaving boat in water without antifoul

I've a mate who divides his time between New Zealand and the UK, he's just bought a boat in NZ and is leaving it in the water on his mooring. It is not antifouled and he will lift, clean and antifoul when he returns to NZ in 6 months time. Will he potentially damage the hull by leaving it...

Calor 4.5 Butane and 3.5 Propane to be discontinued

Just been down to the local supplier who told me they've received notification that these will be discontinued as from 1st Feb. I cant see the 7kg fitting in the gas locker. So I wondered what other possible solutions there are as I'm sure I'm not the only one with a gas locker for the above...

Boarding a vacant boat without permission

I was talking to someone who said he’d never go on board a boat without the express permission of the owner even to sort an obvious problem as he’d be worried about getting sued for trespass. Personally, I would, if I could avert damage or stop a nuisance ( eg frapping). I’d feel grateful if...

    What should I have done?

Was singlehanded sailing hard on wind along a contour next to a steep bank against a 3 knot tide (I draw 2m) A racer came from astern between me and the bank about 20 foot to port. He drew almost level but failed to overtake then shouted for water as he wanted to tack. I said “I’m not racing so...

    Weird events

Went out on boat today and there were 2 strange things , shackle on main sheet block attached to traveller was undone and lying next to traveller, boom wasn’t swinging cos I attach it to side of boat to keep it clear of companionway. 2nd reef was undone where it goes round boom (I use bowline)...

Down the West Coast & Irish Sea

I'm thinking about a summer cruise of going up to Inverness, though the canal to Ft William and then down to Falmouth and back along the English Channel. My wife and two springer spaniels will be my crew on the shorter hops and I'll either singlehand or have mates accompany me on longer legs so...

Left today a couple of hours after Lw and had significant lack of depth out to the fw (like zero) it’s always been fine before even at lw springs. I know the high pressure will be a factor but surely not to that extent.. anyone else experienced this?

When you tattoo yer forearm or backside with your sailor symbol which anchor would you choose? Would you then add a piercing and bung a nice little bit of chain on it or would you consider chain unnecessary?

    Cost of Anodes!

Just ordered a replacement anode for my autoprop and had to sit down for a bit to catch my breath. The cost has increased by 40% over the last 5 years to £78.10 incl of shipping. Is that in line with general anode cost increases? If so I'll have to do a bit more sitting down when I replace...
