There is the possibility of a late Sept/early October one week trip - this is a lads trip (no wives or kids). Prefer scenic over loud/party islands. Don't mind some more challenging sails either.

So which island chain is the preferred for such a charter?

Sporades (if you can get flights!).

if you want challenging and if the melthemi is still blowing, the cyclades or the Dodecanese. probably a lot cheaper than the Sporades

In the Greek Aegean you have the option of chartering from Lavrion or other mainland locations, Samos or Kos. The latter two give you perhaps the most scenic and varied sailing, without needing to travel too far. You can then head for the Cyclades or the Dodecanese, either of which will fully satisfy your requirements. From Samos you will mostly have wind behind you and beat back, or the reverse for Kos assuming you head north. Dodecanese tends to be less windy than the Cyclades, which doesn't mean it's a doddle!

The Ionian is an option lots of island close together. When we chartered from Kos we had had a southerly gale sailing north and to our amazement the wind turned north at gale force the day we wanted to turn back so we had fast trips both ways stopping at various islands. for the best price go to www.latesail.com

On a first read of this, I thought you were implying Kos was in the Ionian. Confused the hell out of me.

I'm guessing these were two completely disconnected thoughts from you. Maybe a new paragraph might have clarified.

Thanks everyone.

I am aware of Latesail and get their emails with offers etc - sounds like this could be dictated also by the cost of reasonable flights direct from Manchester

Direct flights to Kos are £420 from Manchester and £153 from Gatwick on our dates so looks like Mykonos (for Paros) leading us to sail the Cyclades will be our best option - then to find the most suitable boat.
